Dear Betty, My son had a "kindness retreat" at school I really liked the idea and want to encourage all my children to practice kindness. Do you have some ideas for what we can do? Minneapolis, Minn. What a wonderful concept for children to learn at school--and at home! Doing an unexpected kindness for friends and strangers is great practice for all of us. To get started, sit down with your family and make a list of people who deserve a kindness "treat." These ideas may help jump- start your own: • , Veterans Day is Nov. 11. What a perfect excuse to visit a veterans home and bring a batch of home- made cookies, cupcakes, bars or brownies. Your children also could make thank-you cards with stickers and drawings to give to the veterans. ,~ Drop by your local police station or firehouse and bring our "everyday" heroes a homemade treat such as a tin of snack mix, a batch of muffins or loaf of quick bread. You could even bake star-shaped cutout cook- ies and let your children decorate them with white and red- and blue- tinted frosting and sprinkles. • ,Call a shut-in and arrange a visit. Your kids can help you make a pot of soup or stew to freeze in individ- ual servings. Fill a small plastic tub with potting soil and plant with flower or herb seeds for a "watch- it-grow" garden gift. m Plan a yard cleanup day for an elderly or disabled neighbor. Rake leaves, mow the grass or tidy the garden. Bring along a thermos of hot apple cider and an applesauce spice cake to share when the chores are done. ,,Hold a group party for thekids at a homeless shelter. Plan the party with your children and let them organize the activities at the party. Bake cupcakes for the kids and make a bowl of punch or pitchers of lemonade. Dear Betty, My neighbor gave me some home- grown Brussels sprouts. Can I cook them in the microwave? Russell, Kan, you sure can. First, peel off any loose leaves and trim the stem end of the sprouts. Put them in a microwavable dish and add a little water to the bottom of the dish. Cover and cook on high, stirring occasionally, about five to eight minutes or until the sprouts are crisp- tender. Drain and toss with melted butter, salt, pepper and squeeze of lemon juice. Want more ideas? www.BettyCrocker.com Questions? 1-888-ASK BETTY
