It's kind of like going into a mini-hibernation period. Anyway, this change causes these rhythms to fall out of step with our daily schedules. For people with SAD, their bodies have a hard time adjusting to the shortage of sunlight during the winter months. Symptoms are most obvious during January and February when the days are the shortest. So what ARE the symptoms then? If depression occurs regularly during the fall or winter months (depression refers to changes in sleeping and eating habits, persistent sad or empty mood and loss of pleasure in normally enjoyed activities); if this depression subsides during the spring and summer months; if the individual craves starchy or sugary foods; if seasonal epi- sodes substantially outnum- ber non-seasonal depression episodes, they this may be you or somebody you know. Young people and women are at the highest risk for SAD, but it can affect anyone. Ac- tuaUy, estimates are that 25 percent of the population suf- fers from some degree of SAD (usually mild), and five percent suffers from a more severe form of SAD. SAD is caused by Mela- tonin, which is the hormone that helps you fall asleep at night. It is believed to cause symptoms of depression and is produced at higher levels in the dark. Thus, it follows that when the days are shorter and darker, the production of Melatonin increases, causing you body to want to sleep more and you to be more irri- table when you can't call in sick to work and spend that extra couple of hours in bed. So are there ways to overcome this? Yes. For more severe symp- toms, a light treatment called phototherapy might help. It has helped many, however, it hasn't been proven effective as an antidepressant yet. The device most often used today is a Light box that emits very bright light through a filter. Patients sit in front of this box every day while they work or do other activities. Similarly, some of my friends also say going to a tanning bed during the winter helps their mood, but with the after-effects of skin cancer on the side, I don't recommend that at all. This site said that if phototherapy doesn't work, a mild antide- pressant drug might, but as with any drug, there may be unwanted side effects to con- sider. At any rate, if you think this might be what's got you down this winter, by all means, check with your doctor or mental health professional to i-rod out for sure. Want the website? "He's part col- lie and part bull, and he cost a thousand dollars." "Which part is bull?" asked the neighbor. "The part about the thousand dollars," he answered. It seems that there's part bull in much of our talk. And the words that show what you are, are the words you speak when your guard is down. For these words you'll be judged. Once the soiling, sarcastic, scathing word is spoken, nothing will bring it back. It follows a course of damage and despair.
