R!
Jm Company initiated the exploration
coal-bed methane when they began
of Maple Hill Monday morning.
Following several months of
controversy involving the coal-
bed methane gas industry,
exploration in Wabaunsee
County officially began
Monday morning, November
4th, 2002.
Drilling crews arrived south
of Maple Hill, on Mill Brae
Ranch, erected a drilling rig,
and prepared to start their
2500-foot descent into the
earth. According to Engineer
Steven Hash the process will
begin with a 12.25 inch hole
that will be drilled 350 feet
into the ground. That process
will take one day. At that
point a 8 5/8" casing will be
installed in the well, and a
cement solution will be
pumped into the hole, forced
up around the outside of the 8
5/8" casing completely filling
the area around the casing as
well as any cavities that may
be anywhere between the
surface of the ground down to
the 350 foot depth. This
process will seal the top 350
feet of ground providing
assurance salt water, that will
later be pumped from deeper
levels, will not be allowed to
enter the top 350 feet of earth.
Following that process the
drill will dig deeper into the
earth to a depth of
approximately 2500 feet. That
is where the Mississippian
Limestone Formation lies.
Hash said it would take about
a week of 24-hour-a-day
drilling to reach that depth.

FOURTH ANNUAL VETERAN'S
DAY PARADE ACTIVITIES
MONDAY, NOVEMBER 11
On November 11, 2002 the Gateway to the Flint Hills'
Coalition in Eskridge will sponsor the Third Annual
Veteran's Day Parade and Activities.
This event was started three years ago as a way of honoring
the Veterans of Wabaunsee County. Whether Veterans are
still active or members of the National Guard or Reserve
members of the Coalition felt it necessary to show
support for their sacrifices. As one member of the Coalition
put it, "We want our children to realize the freedom we enjoy
is because of our Veterans. Even though we sometimes take it
for granted, we know we must work together to ensure the
freedom and life style we enjoy."
Monday's celebration will begin with a Flag Raising
Ceremony at Heritage Village at 9:30 a.m. A parade down
main street Eskridge to the city park will follow. A formal flag
raising ceremony with music and songs will be held there. A
Flag Retirement Ceremony will follow for anyone that has an
old flag.
There will be a number of contests including the
oldest/youngest veteran, the veteran that traveled the
farthest, and the most complete uniform. A complementary
lunch will be served across the street from the City Park at
the St. John's Catholic Church Parish Hall.
During the activities, contest winners for several categories
will be announced. Students from throughout Wabaunsee
County were encouraged to participate in coloring and essay
contests. Six first place $100 United States Savings Bonds
and five second place $50 United States Savings Bonds will
be awarded.
COMMISSIONERS APPROVE
CONDITIONAL USE PERMIT
FOR ROCK QUARRY
NEAR MAPLE HILL
A public hearing was held Monday morning, November 4th,
in the Wabaunsee County Commissioner's Room. The hearing
was held to listen to arguments, both for and against a
conditional use permit request made by Mill Brae Ranch,
Maple Hill. Ranch Manager Mark Nikkel and Attorney J.B.
King of Fisher, Patterson, Sayler & Smith, Topeka, requested
the permit be granted so they could remove and sell I/mestone
rock from sections 35 and 11 on Mill Brae Ranch.
A neighboring landowner, Frank Sabatini, and his attorney,
John Waugh, Eskridge, were also present. Sabatini filed a
protest against the conditional use permit.
King spoke to the commissioners first. He reminded them
that Mr. Nikkel had appeared before the Wabaunsee County
Planning Commission in October with a request for the
conditional use permit. He added that the planning
commission members not only recommended approval of the
request, but also voted unanimously in favor of the
recommendation. King went on to explain that his client had
provided a list of information concerning the quarrying
operation as well as information detailing how they intend to
reclaim the quarry after the rock is removed.
Waugh argued that Nikkel and Mill Brae Ranch owners,
Roger and T.D. Steele, had not f'ded the proper application
forms. Waugh went on to say that although he and his client,
Mr. Sabatini, did not wish to be "nit picky" about the issue, it
was important that the forms be completed properly and that
