your window box on the south
or west sides, watering will be
much more frequent and you
may need much hardier, tem-
perature-resistant bulbs than
if you planted your box on the
north or east sides.

to mention he's also a gradu-

K-State. Now, the reason you
shouldn't use field soft when
you plant a window box is that
field soil is more compacted
than potting soft. Oxygen and
other nutrients might not get
down to where they should be
and may suffocate your bulb
or literally kill it from starva-
tion. When you pick out a soil,
get a good potting soil with a
lot of loam, vermiculite or
pearlite in it. Soft that con-
tains these ingredients is usu-
ally a little lighter than normal
soft and allows for better cir-
culation of air and nutrients
through it.
Placement of your window
box is also a consideration.
Please consider that window
boxes require a lot ~ore fre-
quent watering than a regular
garden spot for the simple fact
that they are contained, and,
being such, they dry out
faster• Some places, however,
dry out much faster than oth-
ers. Consider whether or not
there will be any shade for
your box and how much; a
window box placed on the
south or west sides of your
property will dry out a lot
faster because the sun is al-
Two Arab chieftains were
brought to London and entertained
lavishly by the British government.
As they were about to leave they
were asked, "What would you like
to take home?"
"Two hot water faucets," said
one, "so we could have hot water
any time we wished."
They saw the easy side of hot
water - the fancy faucets, not the
hard work and the heat.
Many today would like the
gleaming gadgets of godliness.
They'd like to have the crown, not
the cross.
But there's no easy way• We
must believe, or be lost; conquer
or be conquered; do or die; sacri-
fice or be sacrificed.
What's your decision?

ST. JOHN FUNDRAISER BENEFITS
TEACHER'S FAMILY
A fundraiser to benefit the family of Mrs. Shelly Ritter was
held at St. John Lutheran School on Sunday evening, September
29. Mrs. Ritter, the kindergarten teacher at St. John for the
2001-2002 school year, died following an automobile wreck on
July 30, leaving behind her husband, Shannon, and three sons,
Tony, Levi, and Skylar. Members of St. John School Board, St.
John PTL, and Aid Association for Lutherans Branch #1062
prepared pancakes, sausage, and eggs for those in attendance.
More than 200 residents from Alma, McFarland, Paxico and
Wamego enjoyed a filling meal and deemed the evening a
success.
