A Day On The Trail
Who Wants Your Help?
"Was that horse tethered?,
I asked Elle Lee, who was in
the passenger seat.
The horse was on her side
of the road. "No, he wasn't[
And, it is not open range up
herel"
I starting looking for a
driveway to turn around and
go back to inform the owner,
the horse was out and eating
grass along a State Highway.
To make things worse, it was a
holiday and lots of travelers
were out moving about.
We got back to the farm
where the horse was grazing at
the edge of the road like he
owned the areal Just then, a
small white car came out of
the lower drive and I asked the
young girls if they lived there.
The one driving the car said,
"My grandma does." I asked if
she knew the horse was out

and she said, "I told her." As
she continued driving out of
the yard, a lady came out on
the front porch and yelled at
the young girl as they sped
away. The lady disappeared
into the house again.
I assumed she went back
in the house for a moment to
get her shoes, a rope or what-
ever. I turned into the upper
drive and stopped my vehicle.
Ella Lee is a farmer also, so
she climbed out of the cab to
lend a hand. We proceeded to
stand on the highway to alert
travelers until the lady could
get her horse in tow.
Like I said, "I assumed it."
Boy, was I wrong and it proves
the old theory of assuming
that I heard years ago in my
nurse's training dayst "Don't
assume anything as the word
spells ass-u-me[" And, that it
doesl
A man on a tractor ap-
peared on the highway coming
from the north. I said to Ella
Lee, "Maybe help is on the
wayl" Sure enough, he
turned in the lower drive and
continued to the shed. Once
again, I assumed he was going
for a rope since he didn't stop
once he got in off the highway
and get off of his tractor to get
the horse. He continued to
stay around the shed like it
was not his probleml
Finally, the lady appeared
on the porch again and this
time she had a portable phone
to her ear. Wouldn't you just
figure she was calling for help
to capture the horse? As she
leisurely walked out to the
road, one could tell she was
just chit-chatting on the
phone. She did takethe
phone from the ear long
enough to say, "He doesn't
usually come out this far["
I looked at Ella Lee and we
both got in our..truck and
backed out of the drive. The
lady with the phone to her ear
starting walking back toward
the house with one hand on
the horse's neck and the other
hand holding the phone to her
ear so as not to miss one word
of her conversationt The man
that was on the tractor, con-
tinued to play down at the
shed area.
Once again, we were on our
way to the fn-eworks celebra-
tion at the lake. I looked at
Ella Lee and said, "Do you
suppose that is why people no
longer stop to help with crit-
ters along the highway?"
What a different world we live
in today.
