B.J. Eastman receives scholarship
EASTMAN WINS MACHINISTS'
SCHOLARSHIP
Brian J. Eastman, is this
year's recipient of an IAM
scholarship. It marks the first
time someone from Topeka
SMT, Lodge 378, has received
one of these national scholar-
ships.
The scholarship goes to a
student based on his or her
academic achievement, extra
curricular activities and ser-
vice to school and community.
The award shines favorably
on Brian's teachers at Mission
Valley High School. B.J. is one
of only 15 winners from 737
applicants. Thirteen scholar-
ships went to railroad em-
ployees' dependents and two
went to members themselves.
A committee of four educa-
tors not connected with the
union selects scholarship
winners. Judges consider
grades, attitude toward study,
personal references, test
scores, opinion of counselors
and teachers as well as outside
activities.
The IAM Scholarship Pro-
gram was set up by members
of the International Associa-
tion of Machinists and
Aerospace Workers at the 1960
convention. It is financed by
donations from lodge mem-
bers throughout the United
States and Canada.
The program was set up be-
cause of the cost of continuing
education after high school.
Brian receives $2,000 per
year for two years while
studying machine tool tech-
nology at Kaw Area Technical
School.
B~I. is the son of Jim and
Rose Eastman of Eskrldge.
