Page 6 The Wabaunsee County Signal-Enterprise, Thursday, June 13, 2002 undulating dance. The sound of the wind upon the grain was like the washing of the ocean waves on a distant sandy beach. One could imag- ine a great, green and golden inland sea before the forces of nature. It had been some time since we have traversed the road to Council Grove and we noticed a herd of buffalo in one pas- ture. In another pasture, three mares and their matching foals grazed lazily along a distant fence line. In one farmer's corral was a mare with twin foals, on wobbly legs, competing for mother's milk. One of the most humorous happenings occurred a few years ago on Highway 177, at the junction of Highway 57/K- 4 [West) to Dwight. Located on the east side of this intersec- tion is a small hog-farm oper- ation. One would not be read- fly aware of it, as the pens and barns are obscured by shrubs and trees. View from the Back Seat by: Vicky Jones On that particularly fine Sunday afternoon, we were driving with some friends (in a car} to Council Grove for lunch at the Hayes House. We turned off Highway 4 and pro- ceeded south on 177, when our friend suddenly stopped his car dead in the road. Standing In the north bound lane of traffic with a litter of baby pigs, was a huge black and white sow (mama pig) taking in the scenery, apparently out for an afternoon stroll away from the confines of her pen. When the sow spotted our car, she scampered off down the driveway of the hog farm with all her piglets except one, whose nose was pointed southward, apparently en- thralled by the big, fiat roll of blacktopl A few seconds passed and the little porker turned around, couldn't find his mama and squealed all the way home! We laughed so hard that we cried. The trip to Council Grove was filled with fond memories and new ones to be made. Un- til the next time, see you down the highway - from the back seat! Last Sunday after- noon, the wind whipped up white caps on Lake Wabaunsee and prevented several recre- ational crafts from venturing out. However, neither rain nor heat nor blasts of wind can deter the heartiest motorcy- clist from cruising the Flint Hills in the summer! Well, perhaps the rain would deter me, but not the heat or wind! Sunday we joined a friend for a short motorcycle excur- sion to Council Grove, Kansas via Highway 4, then south on that marvelously straight Highway i77. It was humid and warm, but the sun had slipped behind layers of low, gray clouds, which were pushed along by a stiff wind out of the south. Rain was in the forecast for later in the evening, but the afternoon was too nice to stay home. Even if it was windy~ Kansas Highway 4 splits south at the K-99/K-4 junction just 5 miles west of Lake Wabaunsee. The two-lane, blacktop road gently curves westward past Chalk Road and the Wagstaff Ranch, then passes through flatter Sarm- lands and pastures near Alia Vista, Kansas. We passed sev- eral large wheat fields that were gradually turning from green, to yellow-green and then to that pale, golden color that signals harvest-time. The sharp wind pushed through the fields, the grain heads of the wheat bending and bowing gracefully before that unseen force of nature in a rhythmic, Drug Problem?
