CAREY RECEIVES
FULL TIME PASTOR
OF THE YEAR
AWARD
The Texas Annual Confer-
ence of the United Methodist
Church at the Commission on
Small Membership Churches
banquet announced that this
year's award for Full Time
Pastor of the Year went to the
Reverent Phyllis Carey. She
serves Kosse First and Reagan
United Methodist Churches.
There were several criteria for
the selection. There must be
work done in the local church,
outreach to community, serv-
ice in community, and ecu-
menical activity with other
churches. Reverend Carey
also serves on committees for
the Bryan District, the Nomi-
nating Committee, and the
Committee on the District Su-
perintendency. Rev. Carey
also is co-director for Houston
North-Bryan District Church
Camp. At this year's Texas
Annual Conference 2002 she
was also elected to serve on
two Texas Conference posi-
tions, the Commission on
Small Membership Church
and the Committee on Devo-
tional Life at this Annual
Conference.
Reverend Carey's nomina-
tion was made by a local
member of the Kosse Church
and the Commission for the
Texas Annual Conference
voted Reverend Carey to win.
Phyllis was one among 34
nominees out of 700+
churches in the Texas Annual
Conference. Phyllis Carey is a
former resident of the Alma
area and a graduate of Alma
High School in 1974. Phyllis
received her undergraduate
degree from Sam Houston
State University, Huntsville, in
August of 1997, a Bachelor of
Arts in English and a minor in
Psychology. Reverend Carey
has been an ordained deacon
since June 2000. She received
a Masters of Divinity from
Brite Divinity School on the
campus of Texas Christian
University in December of
2000. In June of 2003 she
looks forward to ordination as
an elder in the United Meth-
odist Church.
Phyllis' mother is Jessie
Walls of Volland. Phyllis and
her husband, John, have three
children and live in Kosse,
Texas. Matthew, age 23, is a
student at Blinn Junior Col-
lege and is a store manager of
right Texaco stations in the
Bryan-College Station area.
Lisa, age 20, is a sophomore at
Urt/versity of North Texas at
Denton. She works at the
Method/st Student Center on
Campus and Beth Marie's Ice
Cream Shop. Steven, age 15,
will be a sophomore at Groes-
beck High School, Kosse,
Texas, in the faiL

LAND KANSAS SIGNS
SID HOOBLER
Land Kansas signs Sid
Hoobler, local Senior Indus-
trial Engineer, to real estate
agency agreement.
Mr. Hoobler, a life resident
of this area, is active in
church, 4-H, youth sports and
various community events.
Having worked in Topeka for
nearly 25 years, graduating
from KSU and St. Mary's High,
Mr. Hoobler is very familiar
with Topeka, Manhattan and
most of the towns in between.
Mr. Hoobler is a Past Mas-
ter of Alma Masonic Lodge
#161, deacon of Male Hill
Community Congregation
Church, member of the Kaw
Valley chapter of Old Time
Fiddlers 86 Pickers, and former
chairperson of 'Save Our
Schools' community action
group.
Sid and his wife, Lynn, and
their three children live in Ma-
ple Hill. Their daughters,
Harley and Lacy, attend USD
321 in Rossvflle, and their
son, Preston, will be attending
KSU in the fall.
Land Kansas broker, Doug
Wittmer, said, "I'm delighted
Sid Hoobler joined our
agency." His extensive man-
agement experiences in the
areas of production, engi-
neering, and account-
ing/finance bring with them a
degree- of organization and
professionalism that is sure to
produce positive results.
"Sid's talent and enthusiasm,
will undoubtedly help a large
number of individuals realize
their home ownership
dreams," states Mr. Wittmer,
"We're glad he joined our
team.
AMER/CAN LEGION
AUXILIARY MEETING
The Alma American Legion
Auxiliary, Post 32, held their
monthly meeting on June 5,
2002. After the meeting was
called to order, the Legion and
Auxiliary members recited the
Flag Salute.
President Elsie Hat.field
thanked everyone for their
efforts in decorating and put-
ting crosses out at the ceme-
teries. She also thanked the
ladies for their work on getting
things ready for the lunch that
was served after the Memorial
Day ceremonies.
The Girls State and Boys
State delegates will give a
presentation on their experi-
ences at the next meeting in
September. Auxiliary mem-
bers are asked to bring a
dozen cookies for refresh-
ments.
Trish Ringel reported that
we should have the new heat-
ing and air conditioning units
installed by the time of our
next meeting in September.
Elvera Gehrt suggested
that we have an ice cream so-
cial for a fundraiser and social
event. We will try to contact
someone to provide entertain-
ment for the event, which is
tentatively scheduled for July
20m, starting at S:O0. Mem-
bers will be contacted to either
make ice cream or finger des-
serts.
The next Auxiliary meeting
will be September 4, 2002 at
7:00.

EARNS FCCLA
SCHOLARSHIP FOR
SUMMER IN JAPAN
Amanda Ebert, a junior at
Norton Community High
School in Norton, Kansas is a
2002 recipient of the Japanese
Exchange Program Scholar-
ship by Family, Career and
Community Leaders of Amer-
ica, Inc. (FCCLA) and the
K i k k o m a n Corporation.
Twenty FCCLA members were
chosen to spend approxi-
mately six weeks in Japan,
each living with a Japanese
host family.
Funded by the Kikkoman
Corporation of Japan, this
program began in 1979. To
date, 416 FCCLA members
have received scholarships.
This year over 50 FCCLA
members applied for the
scholarships, which are val-
ued at more that $4,000 each.
The process involved an ex-
tensive application, recom-
mendations, screening and an
interview. Applicants were
Judged on leadership qualities,
openness to new experiences
and ideas, and their degree of
involvement in FCCLA.
Ebert departs on June 23rd
and will arrive home August
5th. She stated, "Receiving
this scholarship is such an
honor for me. I worked hard
to earn this terrific opportu-
nlty, and can't wait to bring
back many memories and
gain the experience of a life-
tlme."
Her chapter adviser is
Regina Stark.
Ebert is the daughter
Ed and Sue Ebert of Norton
and the granddaughter of
Frank and Betty Silva,
Alma, and Dave and Patricia
